79 MILLION PEOPLE (Forbes) will start their own business in the next three years. That is both staggering and the wave of the future. I applaud you for choosing to enter the water. That is a great initial step. I can tell you, however, that choosing only to body surf will cause you to miss out on a lot of experiences and bigger waves that could have taken you further than you ever imagined!
Here’s the bottom line...people do business with people they know, like and trust. If you use your UPQ BRAND to attract people in your niche and willingly share free, valuable information and insights that offer solutions and benefit your loyal following through your BLOG, they will be more than happy to purchase your services and products when the time is right for them. In fact, they will say, “How can I work with YOU?” You will easily and naturally BUILD your business. And you can take that to the BANK..Your Bank!
Positioning yourself and acquiring the proper skills will determine whether you ride the wave to success through the 4 B’s or if you miss it altogether.
BELIEVE you can be ONE of those 79 Million People…and be SUCCESSFUL at it! It is your Attitude that will determine how well you utilize your surf board, once you have selected a good one! It will mean going out to catch a new wave, time and time again, after falling off your board. Just dare to ride another wave!
Yes, it’s about PROGRESS...not Perfection. When you dare to dance on the edge, and then take a flying leap off, trusting that you will either fly or find solid ground, you will look at CHAOS (a necessary element for shifting, changing, evolving and transforming) in a whole different light. Feeling Overwhelmed?
Let’s use K.I.S.S. (that’s Keep It Simple Stuff).
Bottom Line? Plug-ins and WordPress Widgets are the FUEL & DELIVERY SYSTEM for promoting your blog CONTENT.
It’s not either/or…it is both/and.
Yes, you need
- Good CONTENT (remember…it’s progress, not perfection!), and
- FUEL (plug-ins) that fires up a Great DELIVERY SYSTEM (wordpress widgets)Can you imagine trying to “eat” without food and without a delivery system to get it to your mouth? In general, there are lots of foods (plug-ins) out there to fuel your body, but without a delivery system such as your hands, knife, fork, spoon, etc. ((widgets) you will not experience the exquisite art of eating (having people experience your content)! Get my drift?
The point here is that you need a way of Feeding your CONTENT from your blog to PEOPLE (yes, they are humans…not just “internet traffic”…how cold!) so that PEOPLE on social networks and other blogs receive the VALUE from your words of wisdom, service, product, or business opportunity (whether traditional, mlm, direct sales, network marketing…offline or online).
You literally want to send out your content to people across the diverse array of networks via facebook, twitter, hubs, digg and others…and attract people back to your blog. When that happens and you have the honor and privilege of getting to know those individuals better (and perhaps the opportunity to be of value and service to them in some way), you will have experienced an aspect of attraction marketing. Thank you Mike Dillard! (He is, after all, the Godfather of Attraction Marketing).
What value is there in having GREAT CONTENT if nobody reads it because they aren’t aware that it exists? Besides, you can always go back and edit your post, right? Nothing is forever and cast in stone (even stone)!
And…there’s always that DELETE button!

Who would have believed that the U.S. Government and Social Networks would be Research Partners?
Read that title again>>>>>>>>
Right. No way, you are thinking!
Think again!
The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and social networks linked arms to do a little research …research that could potentially solve a problem of national scope in the future.
The Washington Post said, “In DARPA’s Network Challenge, tied to the 40-year anniversary of the Internet, the Department of Defense’s research arm placed 10 weather balloons in public places around the country. The first team to locate and submit the balloons’ correct geographic coordinates would get the cash prize. Ready, set, Twitter!”
The Network Challenge (remember that word “network”…we’ll come back to that later) capitalized on CrowdSourcing,
a term first coined by Wired Magazine in 2006.
It essentially means: utilizing the new pool of cheap labor: everyday people using their spare cycles to create content, solve problems, even do
corporate R & D.
In the case of DARPA’s Network Challenge, it was locating 10 weather balloons.
Just an added tidbit of info…Finding one of these 10 weather balloons was worth more than a Big Mac Meal!
Yes, $40,000 was at stake for the team who most quickly found those 10 balloons!!
Can you say and then repeat… “M-O-N-E-Y Motivates!”
The winning team was spearheaded by Riley Crane, a postdoctoral research fellow at MIT’s Media Lab. MIT’s team set up an elaborate information-gathering method that essentially used CrowdSourcing. Varying levels of financial reward went to the first person to spot the balloon, with others involved in contributing being rewarded at a smaller level. Left over money went to charity.
I believe this next part explains the Key for the winning team!
Crane says that the team’s decision to spread the wealth was instrumental to its success, as it gave people an incentive to share good information, and a feeling of investment in the process. He was less interested in the monetary prize than in the potential for social research.
Some questions asked at the end of this “high” adventure with 10 balloons!
“Could we design an alert system to help us find missing children? Could we redesign the incentive structure for police rewards?”

This day of partnership I have described above happened back in 2009. But…it is worth noting in 2010, as there are certain ramifications for the future of network marketing! Welcome to the newest wave!
Ok…let me continue to connect the dots to network marketing. Remember that I noted that DARPA called it the
“Network” Challenge?
Can you understand how similar this is to what Darpa did to find the 10 balloons…even to the point of give financial incentives! The biggest difference? They are rewarding people for inputting just 10 license plate numbers a month in order to build a HUGE data base vs. finding 10 weather balloons!
Remember the question from above asked after the Network Challenge was over…
“Could we design an alert system to help us find missing children?”

How does this bode for the future of networking marketing? I believe more companies will emerge combining CrowdSourcing and the Network Marketing model in various ways. It won’t end with just information gathering vs. offering a product. The sky and beyond is limitless!
At the end of the day, however, the bottom line is that a large group of people will endeavor to work together to accomplish a goal and millionaires,
multi-millionaires, and even billionaires will be created in the process!

Here’s a video I did about experiencing “changes” in my life at the age of 55…I will turn 56 on September 8, and I am happy to say that I am now below my Body for Life weight (when I came in the Top 2000 of 200,000 in 2002!). Yes, I am at 128, two pounds below my final Body for Life weight.
Here is my “before” pic when Roby and I did Body for Life in 2002 (was at 151 pounds).

Here is our entry photo for Body for Life in 2002 when I was 130 pounds for my final entry pic. Since that time I had stayed around 135 pounds. (I’m the blonde on the right).
The problem was that I went through the change during the last year, and put on 10 pounds this past winter. I was staring at 145 on the scales! Yikes…how did that happen? So, though I wasn’t as heavy when I first did Body for Life in 2002, I was approaching it! Yep, that “before pic” from 2002 was looking more and more familiar. I have now lost 17 pounds…just cheating and eating, so am tipping the scales at 128…the lowest I have been since college (and I graduated in 1974)!

“Over 35″ Facebook Users Double in Last 30 Days!

The biggest growth on Facebook, in terms of absolute new users over the last six months, came amongst users 35-44. Over 4 million more US women 35-44 and nearly 3 million more US men 35-44 used Facebook in March 2009 compared to September 2008.

Social Media Marketing? What Is IT? What Is The Best Way to Use It? What role does Google Analytics play?
To have not heard ANYTHING about social media today, you would have to be either dead or living on an island with no contact with the outside world. The way we interact, create, consume & share information is changing on a daily basis as more people log online and engage in the digital world. This is a major padadigm shift in business models.
The interesting thing is rather than ALL OF US being at the mercy of the advertisers anymore, they are truly at our beck and call, as social media has created a new type of partnership, a more equal partnership. We, the consumers, have a lot more say in what happens. It is a different era than when the traditional advertising giants clearly were the lead partner of the dance team. Today, however, that traditional lead is now following more and more, due to the folks in its data base who have stepped in to exert their influence and take the lead position.
If you aren’t blogging, chatting it up and offering opinions on forums (whether personal or business), sharing your most current pics and videos, and/or engaging on social networks (whether it is generic ones like Facebook and MySpace or special passion ones like Food Connect), you are clearly, as they say, “behind the times.” (Note: register for my FREE Webinar on “Blogging Your Way to Success” on Wednesday, March 25, 7 p.m. PST at MagneticMarketingDiva). And, the bigger picture is this…Where the people are, so go the advertisers. Why? Because they have to in order to stay alive, you know…profitable. You cannot continue to ads in newspapers for 15-30 year olds, when they are not reading them. And many who “read newspapers,” are actually reading online editions. I , on the other hand, still LOVE getting my USA Today, grabbing a cup of coffee, and sitting in my sun room (after getting out of the hot tub) on the week-end…enjoying the pleasure of reading the paper from one end to the other! Especially right now with men’s and women’s basketball championships underway! Of course, just consider me bi. I like holding and reading the newspaper and also getting up-to-the-minute updates on news, sports, etc. Yea, I want to have my cake and eat it too! The question becomes…How long can advertisers continue to do both? If it comes down to making a choice, what do you think they are going to choose? I believe they will go online if there are limited funds.
It is truly an interesting era today. If I want to look up the meaning of a word, I no longer grab my dictionary…I go online! If I want to make dinner reservations, I no longer look up the restaurant in the yellow pages…I go online to FoodConnect. If I want to research a topic and gather data, I no longer pick up an encyclopedia as I did when I was in grammar school, 45 years ago. If I did, the information would be outdated compared to the up-to-the-minute and revised data I can obtain on the internet. Some pundits point out that the internet can also leave us feeling overwhelmed and disconnected while simultaneously connecting us. There may be some truth to that…that is, until our best friend in 1st grade finds us through Facebook, and we end up chatting for an hour online!
The bottom line is that the internet, overall, encourages us to Engage & Join the Conversation! Before you start thinking, “Oh yea, that’s what Anderson Cooper and Twitter encourage us to do,” hold on just a minute! Two Women & a Poodle had that as their rallying motto for their year-long journey, Gay Into Straight America, long before those two uttered those words. As we criss-crossed America in 2005/2006, we encouraged and cajoled people to engage and connect…to commit to deeper conversations. We have continued this mantra through our non-profit, Stand UP Speak OUT. I am one of the “Two Women,” Robynne Sapp is the other one, and Rylee Joy is the standard poodle. When we asked people to Join the Conversation back in 2005, with the intention of Engaging Hearts & Minds, Creating Authentic Connections, & Transcending Differences that Separate Us, we met mostly offline… in rest stops, coffee shops, restaurants, churches, PFLAG meetings, corporations, and homes. Our main “online activity” was putting out a newsletter each and every week while we were on the road. Halfway throughour journey, we started blogging and podcasting to reach a larger audience.
At Social Media, they say, “People are already talking, the question is how do you become part of the conversation.” Goes rigiht in line with what we were saying on our journey.
So, I’ve answered “What is IT?” Now to look at little more at “What Is the Best Way to Use It?” That is where Google analytics comes in. The best way to use it is mostly each person’s opinion. And, yes, there is Google analytics available to check out your stats. They say, “Win Customers, Not Just Visitors.” Google analytics helps you identify the key words, ads, referrals, and campaigns that contribute the most to your bottom line. The NEW Google Analytics displays your analysis within the context of larger trends. I like their thinking. They say “See the forest. And the trees.” That thought process resonates with my overall philosophy of a both/and world vs. an either/or one. Those living in an either/or, black/white, world are going to be left behind. It’s like listening to those who argue, ”Which is more important…Sales or Marketing?” As my colleague, Brooke Barnett, Mr. “It’s math, not magic, “ says, “There are two things I wish I had learned earlier in life. “Sales Rule the World. Marketing Rules Sales.” Once again, you might be tempted to decipher whether one is more important than the other, but that question misses the deeper truth I’ve been discussing. It isn’t either/or. It is both/and… literally and metaphorically. If you want to increase your SQ (Success Quotient) you have to intergrate the two.
If you have read many of my blog posts by now, they can almost become mini-novels, and you might find yourself thinking, “Where is she going with this?” I will now tie the threads together to weave the big picture of my claim that you would see the end result similarities of what we both were/are attempting to accomplish, the “both” being Two Women & a Poodle on their year long journey back in 2005/06 and SocialMedia.com and what they are attempting to accomplish in 2009.
Ok…drumroll…It is clear to me is that AUTHENTIC CONNECTION & DEEPER RELATIONSHIP WITH ONE ANOTHER is what we all aspire to have through engaging with one another in this internet world. So, in essence, that’s not so different from what we want from our lives offline. It is the one common thread that we experienced with people, over and over again on our journey. It is the very reason we said, “You can’t Hate someone whose story you know,” and that is true offline or online. When we get to know one another, it is magical!
Yep, folks…bottom line is it’s all about connection!
